Cahiers d’Art Celebrates Its 100th Issue with Hiroshi Sugimoto

Cahiers D’art has been a well-known and celebrated publishing house, gallery and magazine since 1926 when it was founded by Christian Zervos in Paris. The magazine was relaunched in 2012 and this summer, in 2014, it celebrates its 100th issue by concentrating on Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto. Specifically, it focuses on Sugimoto’s story titled, The World is Dead Today, in which his modern photographs are laid side-by-side with antiques, creating a stark contrast.

This rare issue sheds a new light on Hiroshi Sugimoto, by releasing never before seen views of his work, his own writing describing his career, an interview with the artist and commentary by the chief curator of Palais de Tokyo.

Hiroshi Sugimoto is a Tokyo native, currently living and working in New York. He is a contemporary visual artist who has collaborated with huge names in both the fashion and music industries, such as Hermès and U2. With the help of a $6 million grant from the Japan Society, Sugimoto established the Odawara Art Foundation in  2009 in an attempt to publicize Japanese culture as a whole.

His work is currently on display in the permanent collections of museums such as The Art Institute of Chicago, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, the Israel Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Centre Georges Pompidou, The National Gallery, etcetera. His work has also been on display with solo exhibitions around the world, and a 30 year retrospective of his work was displayed at the Mori Art Museum of Tokyo before it traveled to two other destinations. Sugimoto describes his work by saying that “Some believe photography reflects reality, but in my own photography reality seems to slip away from my camera.”

As Art Basel kicks off, Cahiers D’art will also be presenting a new book by Thomas Schütte, placed inside of a booth designed by the artist himself. Schütte has even designed a wooden house, which will become Cahiers D’art’s library for their art publications.
