Artist of the Week: John Whitlock

Your Name: John Whitlock
Where you’re from: Brooklyn, NY
Where you live: Brooklyn, NY

What was your first experience with art?

My first notable experience was probably meeting Andy Warhol backstage at an Elton John concert when I was seven or eight. Two years later I met Aerosmith backstage at an Aerosmith concert. The latter had a greater impact on me.

What influences you?

Mostly other artists, but not necessarily visual artists; I’m often more influenced by someone’s approach than I am by their aesthetics.

How do you choose the materials/images to work with?

I rarely choose images based on the content or subject matter. Usually I’ll look for pieces that fit into whatever I’m working on compositionally, whether it’s a specific tonal quality, color or just overall mood.

What are you currently working on?

I just finished some work for a group show that opens soon at Kinz & Tillou in Brooklyn, and just took down some work from a group show at The Invisible Dog, also in Brooklyn (see our round-up of the show here!). Other than that setting up my new studio space and trying to plan some new video works.

What is there too much of and too little of?

Too many smart phones, too few smart people.

What are you obsessed with right now?

Ptah, the El Daoud and my girlfriend’s new SodaStream.

If you were another person, place or thing, what/who would it be?

What is your WILD Wish?

See above.
