Yana Toyber Polaroids Stop Time

Photographer Yana Toyber grew up in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, but her Ukrainian heritage is evident in her multifaceted photography. Her new project, “This Time,” explores the nonlinearity of time and, in turn, the surrealism and abstract qualities of an image. The artist, who graduated from the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan and attended the School of American Ballet as a teenager, finds a balance between the ultra effeminate and the modestly masculine via her use of soft light and heavy saturation. “The project has an element of portraiture, landscape, and nude photography,” Toyber says. “A strong sense of freedom penetrates and resonates the images singularly and as a whole.” The work, all of which is captured on instant film, evokes the dreamstate—a semi-conscious mindscape where time has ceased, and nothing is melancholy.

Next March, the series will be compiled into a book published by Damiani press.
