WILD Profile: Kevin Bourland

Photographer Kevin Bourland’s world is one that’s filled with light. Interested in “manipulating light to skew perception,” Bourland creates images with a vibrancy and luster that delight and mystify the eye.

In his series Family of Circles, he refracted and diffracted light into the barrel of his lens, creating patterns with material like textured plastics and glass. The result is a range of vibrant circles of varied bands that shimmer, some of them resembling the surface of technicolored seashells. Another series, Subsurface Exploration, examines the intricacies of the surface of stones in dialogue with light. Photographed with long exposures, the gems reveal veneers with rhythmic fractures and, at times, subtle streaks resembling a painter’s brush.
