WILD PROFILE: DAN BLAKE – THE CAT’S MEOW

Who: Dan Blake
What: Stylist, Fashion editor for 7TH MAN MAGAZINE
Where: London

What’s on his mind today: My Halloween costume. What to go as? I have access to the most amazing real hair wigs and I have my eye on this blond bob hair which I was going to wear with a black roll neck and heels. I dunno what I will be exactly, I’ll just carry I long knife and maybe no one will ask.

What he’s currently working on: I have been a bit busy with this AW’11 issue of 7TH MAN just released so that’s been my real focus and now I get to kick back for a week or so.  I decided to style a few bands for 7TH along with Music Editor Hannah Al-Shemmeri.  We featured Two Wounded Birds and Gross Magic, two British guitar bands who are on the up-and-up.  It’s always different styling musicians who are very particular about their taste and appearance than models who will generally wear whatever you’ve picked out. So turning up to the shoot I feel a little smug if the group members love the samples and ask me if I can “do anything?” Would love to do something for The WILD at some point.

What he thinks there is too much of, and too little of: Too much nasty shit (I mean this on so many levels, really), and not enough general niceness (also, all over the place)

With whom he would most like to go on a “tête à tête”: I am a huge fan of Helena Bonham Carter so to hang out with her for a bit would be cool.  I love the styling and costume in many of her role and of course she’s stunning to watch, dark and mysterious. Since being I’ve always been drawn to dark things, I support the bad guys. Star Wars, I definitely wanted Luke to falter and I would definitely head to Slytherin if I were at Hogwarts.

What good energy means to him: Erm…wind turbines? But seriously, good energy is when you’ve actually worked through your shit I guess. I know people that make others feel good, who have a knack for that sort of thing and who are great to work with creatively. You don’t have to chant or do yoga, in general good energy comes from knowing yourself and thinking of others and not overestimating your own importance if you’re given a position a power. There are no extras in heaven.

With whom he would like to run a country: Dolly Parton. We’d expand Dollywood one state at a time and just take over. Big hair and boobs compulsory dress for all school children.

What he considers a fashion “faux-pas”: I actually love the idea of wearing road kill conceptually, but I don’t actually want to wear it. Christ, who would? Fashion is best when it inspires beauty and I sometimes I struggle to see that in clothes made of meat, human hair or bits of recycled road kill. All of these things can be cool if they’re done well. I once saw a stylist use some Stella McCartney accessories with real fur stools and hides – I just thought that was rude.

What cracks him up: The Simpsons – I am a real fan.

What kind of movement he would like to start: Some sort of cult involving space travel.

What his WILD Wish is: To have a big white house in the south of Spain, one of those decaying old white ones with colorful cracked tiles on the floor, a massive walled garden with tall pine trees surrounding it and cats, lots of cats running all over the place, feral ones that are free to come and go as they please.  It would be the sort of place that would be make you want to paint and give up on everything else except lovers and beauty for beauty’s sake.
