VIDEO OF THE WEEK – KATE BUSH/EIDER FALLS AT LAKE TAHOE

by: Diego Martínez

If there’s an artist whose work is always awaited by a long-standing audience is Kate Bush. The beloved and always mysterious British chanteuse might have sacrificed most of her pop stardom in favor of a healthy life for her family, but when it comes to her artistry, she could never let her fanbase down.

Last year, she did the unthinkable since 1978: releasing two albums on her Fish People label, both different in their esthetic. But while “Director’s Cut” reflected new takes on old favorites from “The Sensual World” and “The Red Shoes”, her next LP “50 Words for Snow” was truly an ambitious and almost mystical project, easily greeted with certain skepticism.

Instead of going for the traditional music video, Kate promoted the album with stop-motion “Animation Segments” posted on her website to accompany segments of “Misty” and “Wild Man”. The third one in the series is this week’s holder for “Video of the Week”, “Eider Falls at Lake Tahoe”, directed by Bush herself and photographed by award-winning cinematographer Roger Pratt.

The five-minute clip features shadow puppetry designed by Robert Allsopp, “one of my favorite art forms because of its simplicity” according to the singer, and tells the story of a dog and its owner getting together again. Simple might be the word for the technique applied but the result is nothing short of moving and downright brilliant. Then again, you wouldn’t expect any mediocrity coming from pop music’s most inventive woman.
