The xx / Chained

The xx have released the second single off their upcoming record Coexist. After the brilliance of the band’s debut, the anticipation for a follow up has been nearly unbearable. The new track, “Chained,” features intricate beats from Jamie Smith, aka Jamie xx. Smith had previously indicated that the new record will have a more “clubby” sound — presumably influenced by his time spent on the road supporting his solo projects. That being said, the first two singles to drop have remained in the classic downtempo, introspective style of the first album.

Did I not let enough light in

The juxtaposition of Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim’s voices is ever-soothing. It brings a sense of two people singing to themselves in distant places, but perfectly harmonizing with each other through the atmosphere.

Winged or chained
I ask you
Would you have stayed
Did I hold you too tight
Did I not let enough light in
