Premiere: Get In Touch With
My Gold Mask’s ‘Connect’

Pretty much all pop songs are about connection in one way or another, whether with another person or the world. My Gold Mask make things a little more direct on “Connect,” whose video we’re premiering here. The Chicago trio’s sound is big and bold–along with Niki & The Dove’s return, 2016’s shaping up to be another banner year in synth-pop–but they know how to pare things down, too. Filmed in stark black and white, the “Connect” clip reveals that our most compelling relationships are actually with ourselves. As uplifting as it is analytical, the track reflects the name of the album it’s taken from, Anxious Utopia.

“‘Connect’ is a song about modern isolation in an era of being able to be connected to everyone all at once, and simultaneously not being connected to anyone,” the band tells us in an emailed statement. “Directed by award-inning cinematographer and documentarian Peter Rosenbaum and edited by Emmy Award-winning editor Martin Nelson, the short film piece focuses on My Gold Mask frontperson and vocalist Gretta Rochelle. Visually, Rosenbaum wanted to create something that reflected the song’s dissonance. A black and white vintage film noir look was created for a modern song that references the era that formed the beginning of music video.”

When Rochelle asks “Who’s caring?”, the answer just might be you. Anxious Utopia is out now on Moon Sounds Records. Watch “Connect” and follow My Gold Mask on Facebook and Twitter for more.
