Premiere: Wake Up With Siamese’s ‘Chromatose’

Hanging out with theater kids just got more fun, thanks to Siamese’s “Chromatose,” premiered here. On their latest cut, the Dallas, TX band delivers clear-eyed pop that will appeal to fans of Wet and Austra, with a sound both baroque and organic.

“‘Chromatose’ is a sardonic shout out to the neighborhood dilettante, inspired by the Truffaut film Bed & Board,” singer/keyboardist Nicole Marxen-Myers tells us via email. “In the movie, the character of Antoine floats through life, claiming a number of identities, but never commits to one for long. There’s a neighbor character in the film that everyone deems a murderer; ominous music plays every time he strolls through the courtyard. He turns out to be a television star, and the main characters are quick to retract their impressions of him, swapping them for praise. That idea inspired a juxtaposition between whimsy and horror for the song. It’s fun, but there’s something unsettling about it.”

Siamese will expand on their dramatic aesthetic on their upcoming debut The Mesmerist, out next month on Elmwood Recording.

“We enjoy writing from the perspective of film characters because it helps us develop ideas without the pressures of advertising our personal lives,” Marxen-Myers continues. “The lyrics are intended to mirror the playfulness of the French New Wave genre. I worked in a restaurant washing dishes at the time and as I was brainstorming professions to address in the song, I realized I had written ‘Olympian’ next to ‘dishwasher’ in my notebook. It became a comical image, an Olympian dishwasher.”
