MUSIC TO START THE WEEK WITH #008
by: Diego Martínez
Another Monday, another opportunity we’ve got as people to start anew and outdo what we did the previous week. We sure hope you all have rested this past long weekend, enjoying some quality time while paying homage to the men and women who fought for us. With Sunday long behind us, do not sob or dread about the impeding daily routine. It is our duty to serve, and serve we will do, by showcasing our accustomed music recommendations for the next 7 days!
Enough chit-chat, let’s get to it!
1. The Lost Patrol – I’m On To You
Kicking off our WILD playlist is a veteran band from Piermont, whose music is characterized by lush, resounding electric and acoustic guitars, deep synth textures and hauntingly distinctive female vocals. “I’m On To You”, from this year’s “Rocket Sugery”, sees the trio of Stephen Masucci, Michael Williams and Mollie Israel embracing a country feel with a rich and quite melancholic melody.
2. Whalers – Lighthouse
Our attention turns to Whalers, a five-piece that has experimented some buzz in Austin’s indie music scene since their first EP “How The Ship Goes Down” in 2010. Staying true to their roots, the band locked in a house off Riverside Dr. to record “Paddle Easy”, just released via their Bandcamp site. This particular track features White Dress’ tough chick Arum Rae Valkonen on vocals.
3. Mujeres – Wanna Boom
Don’t let this next band’s name fool you. They are not exactly women, but men, all of them from sunny Barcelona, Spain. The foursome met in college while studying film and the result of their crazy project is a tight group that makes filthy, fast garage rock a-la Black Lips and has a don’t-give-a-damn attitude just as appealing.
4. Neon Hitch – Poisoned With Love
It’s nice to go pop every once in a while, especially when there’s a real edge thrown in. Take for instance Neon Hitch: the UK princess turned to Greg Kurstin, who produced Sia and Lily Allen, to create an unusual mid-tempo track filled with electronic effects, creepy organs, demented lyrics, half-yodels and an unbeatable catchy chorus. Not your average sweet love tune at all.
5. Vince Staples & Michael Uzowuru – Versace Rap
Rapper Vince Staples and the late fashion designer Gianni Versace are two worlds apart from each other but somehow they meet in this banging track, produced by Michael Uzowuru. Staples’ rhymes are the equivalent of UZI bullets, violent and deadly as they could ever be, blended with an infectious gritty, grimey, gun-shot-sampling beat.
6. Dusty Springfield – Baby Blue (Horse Meat Disco Edit)
If you think Adele and the late Amy Winehouse are the best examples of soul that ever emerged from the other side of the Atlantic, you should really consider revisiting the amazing discography of Mary O’Brien, better known as the beehived queen herself, Dusty Springfield. Prior to her famed association with Pet Shop Boys, she went into an identity crisis but still was able to record some memorable tunes, like this one from 1978, reworked by London heavyweights Horse Meat Disco.
7. Tingle In The Netherlands – Prostitutes Handbag
Helên T and Owen J are the second coming of Yazoo’s Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke in an absurd parallel world. Together as the bizarre duo Tingle In The Netherlands, they are taking electro-pop to the next level with deep poetry and clever electro twitches. If you think that a song about a handbag made in China and bought by Vagina is hilarious, make sure you buy the entire set through Nerve Echo’s site.
8. Jessica 6 – In The Heat
That Nomi Ruiz is a total dynamo. She is completing a very successful year (which included a feature in Mugler’s menswear collection for Spring/Summer 2012 and a contribution on Eli Escobar’s “Desire”) with the release of “See The Light”, the debut of her band Jessica 6. Track number 4 on that album, “In The Heat”, ties the classy sound of house with R&B and the nu-disco movement of our day for what could easily be the soundtrack to New York’s nightlife in 2012.
9. Little Boots – Shake
Life is good if you’re Victoria Hesketh. She’s been out of the radar since her 2009 album “Hands” but has kept busy with DJ gigs in Europe and the States. A month after playing a whole set in LA, she put together an excellent 45-minute mixtape that featured songs from Metronomy, Classix, Oh Land and even Company B. She even previewed this new danceable song, which also happens to be the title track of her upcoming LP. We can’t get enough of it, and for that we welcome Little Boots back with open arms.
10. College – A Real Hero (feat. Electric Youth)
Finally, 80s lovers Electric Youth are making their second appearance on our WILD playlists and they have reasons for that: they’re pretty damn good. In this particular occasion, they lend vocals for “A Real Hero”, College’s contribution for the original soundtrack of Ryan Gosgling’s awesome movie “Drive”. Take this track not as a depressive comedown, but more as a sweet and dreamy hangover of a crazed Saturday night.
