For his sculptural project Just Grow It! Mr. Plant reconstructs some of Nike’s most iconic sneaker designs using found, natural objects. This project was started by Parisian artist Christophe Guinet (who works under the name Monsieur Plant) as a means to explore human’s relationship to the cycle of life, creating objects whose withering and eventual demise mimic our own physical decay. The objects are equally an exploration in the beauty that can be found in nature as opposed to manufacturing; the consumable goods our earth produces unasked versus the man-made infinitely manufactured, used, and discarded footwear.

In Guinet’s terms, these cult items revered by urban youth are transformed into a vegetable state, “as if the state of nature had reasserted itself into industrialization.” The Just Grow It! sculptures also speak to our culture’s obsession with hype, consumption, and the brainwashing inherent in branding. Guinet’s works invite us to touch, feel, and emote in a way that is often nullified in the midst of glossy mass manufacturing.
