Major Lazer and MØ Take Mumbai

Major Lazer’s best stuff certainly seems to arise when they turn down the BPMs and snag a pretty voice (read: “Get Free” “Get Free” a million times “Get Free”). This time, Diplo-led DJ collective enlists Danish pop misfit  for “Lean On,” a bouncy track in collaboration with DJ Snake. For the video version, the trio of music makers headed to Mumbai to dance the days away. Cultural appropriation, exploitation? There will certainly be those to make the case (in this and basically every Major Lazer song, for that matter). Less cynically, the video makers say it’s nothing else than a good-natured celebration of music and energy. “India is special and its beauty absolutely humbled me,” says Diplo. “Major Lazer has always been a culture mashup and to us, India feels like some kind of special creature with one foot in history and one firmly in the future.” MØ, for her part, describes the video as a reflection of the people, culture, and warmth experienced in Mumbai. A sincere sentiment, no doubt, though, a video like Grimes’ “Realiti” manages to paint the beauty of the East in a less cartoonish way. The strength of the music isn’t in question; we’ll leave the cultural anthropology to you.
