Karen Millen: No More Tiaras

Karen Millen’s SS14 campaign short is immediately reminiscent of Beyoncé’s recently released “Pretty Hurts” music video (which we, of course, adored), what with its bold damnation of beauty pageant culture. It is also the final phase of the British brand’s refurbishment from high-street old hat, shall we say, to a veritable fashion personality. The campaign has seen collaborations with legendary photographer David Bailey and revered stylist Katy England, both of whom have lent their sought after talents towards conceiving a transformation of the previously dwindling label. Of course, the rebellion in the film invites us—rather lackadaisically—to question beauty and its societally contrived nature. Perhaps more interesting, however, is the film’s invitation to reconsider our opinion of Karen Millen, never before noted as such a connoisseur of cool.
