Jungle, Energy is Everything
My new obsession: Jungle — a mysterious collective out of London whose coded answers tell us both everything and almost nothing at all, depending on what you are looking for. With two brilliant videos and top-notch sound production, it’s my guess that Jungle are no amateurs. But for now, their identity remains mum.
Check out the brand new single “Lucky I Got What I Want,” and our conversation below. Color coordination courtesy of the band.
Who is behind Jungle?
Jungle is built on friendship. There’s no ego, It’s a collective process.
Can you explain your choice in name?
The name came from a lyric in one of our early demos, but as time passes you form different connections with the name. It has begun to be about everyone who is involved and I suppose also represents the sounds that we create on the tracks.
Ultimately though it is metaphor for the jumble of ideas in our heads.
What have you been up to lately?
At the moment we have been working on the live sound. It’s cool to see how studio sounds develop in different environments. Replicating something exactly is virtually impossible, so for us it’s about adapting.
Your video for “The Heat” is amazing. Can you describe the idea behind it?
The idea behind the video is not necessarily to have an idea. It’s about creating something fun to watch. You have to start with what you’d enjoy.
It’s entertainment. You can’t think too deeply about it.
What does good energy mean to you?
Without sounding pretentious, energy is everything. It’s a very subtle thing, but we work on the principle that, if it ‘feels right,’ we go with it.
If you were a sound, that sound would probably be:
A finger click.
If you could see broad social disruption in one aspect, what would it be?
Monkeys dressed as traffic cops getting it all wrong.
A record that changed the way you hear music:
Jungle mixtape for Yourstru.ly
Destiny’s Child – Say My Name
Shuggie Otis – Inspiration Information
Jackson 5 – Keep an Eye
Pharrell – Frontin’
Steve Spacek – Dollar
DJ Mehdi – Signature
Whom do you consider a style icon?
More of the same.
What is your WILD Wish?
To let go.
