Premiere: IRIS Pays Homage To Bowie’s ‘Labyrinth’ in New Video, ‘Follow Me’
If, like us, you remain entranced by 2011’s Drive soundtrack, the virtual surreality and aural aesthetic of IRIS should be right up your avenue. A Spaniard based in Montreal, IRIS evokes the weird world of 80s synth pop with a refined postmodern sophistication à la The Knife or Kate Boy. “Follow Me,” premiered here, renders a sexy, sinister world in which a dark spectre clouds one’s way home. “Will I ever reach the real unknown?” The video introduces fans to the creative multiverse of IRIS, and serves as a tribute to the one-and-only David Bowie, most specifically for his role in Jim Henson’s cult film, The Labyrinth. Given IRIS’ finely-tuned pop persuasion paired with a Lynchian cinematic sensibility, we’d like to think Mr. Bowie is out there, somewhere in the universe beyond, watching “Follow Me” and smiling.
Where she was born: I was born in Burgos, Spain
Where she lives now: In beautiful, one of a kind, Montreal
What she does: I’m a singer, songwriter, and musician
What’s behind the name:
IRIS is a mix of all the knowledge that I gathered throughout my life so far. From my Spanish roots to growing up in Montreal, my thirst to achieve my craziest dreams and overcoming obstacles. I’m Dio, Queen, ABBA, Aerosmith, The Beatles, Phil Collins, Def Leppard, Michael Jackson all the way to Haim, Katy Perry and Bruno Mars, just to name a few, throw in some major love for animal rights and this is what you get!
How she captures ideas:
I’m extremely visual so I get inspired by images and everyday simple things, random moments, movies, etc. “Follow Me” is my homage to Labyrinth and David Bowie. It’s my favorite movie of all time. I’ve seen it and listened to the soundtrack a million times and to this day I still discover something new visually and musically. It’s really amazing. So, when “Follow Me” came about four years ago, it was the perfect song to solidify my obsession with the movie and Bowie.
Her most recent artistic reference:
Hmm, lately I am really enjoying Cupid Deluxe by Blood Orange.
If she were a sound:
A cat’s purr? I’m obsessed with cats. I’m actually part-cat and purrs are the most wonderful, soothing sounds so that’s what I would be.
She believes in:
Not purchasing anything that has been tested on animals nor wearing animal products. Freddie Mercury is God. Rock & Roll, and the Universe.
If she could see a social disruption:
I would make all cell phones disppear for a little while. Go back to the good old days when people actually took the time to communicate with each other and maintained healthier, more “human” relationships. Also, people would go back to taking the time to really enjoy concerts instead of filming and taking pictures throughout the whole show… Yep, we could all benefit from a little less cell phone action!
Something great she’s read:
“You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here.”
Something great she’s seen:
Fleetwood Mac live. Three hours of pure epicness. The Beach Boys were also pretty incredible. KISS is always a fun concert to go to as well.
The Labyrinth soundtrack, lately more than ever…
She needs to change:
Not letting myself be so terrified of writer’s block. It happens and it’s not the end of the world.
Why she makes music:
It’s everything. Always has, always will. It’s my biggest passion/love. It would be ridiculous if I weren’t making music. I would be miserable. It ain’t easy but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
IRIS’ WILD Wish:
Working on a music project with Steven Tyler.
