According to UN estimates there are currently 27 million human slaves across the globe. Photographer Lisa Kristine has documented the horrors of modern day slavery and the atrocities committed by human traffickers who tap into the very core of poverty-stricken families to exploit the young, the old, and the parents who are born into debt and the cruel monotony of hard labor. Kristine’s recent photo essay for The Atlantic highlights just a few of the stories that need to be told about why we still have so far to go in terms of securing the dignity and rights of all.
