In the Depths of Winter,
CaveofswordS Premiere ‘Blameless’

Xylophone triplets, a quivering undercurrent of bass synth, and the airy voicing of Sunyatta McDermott take us by the hand in the new CaveofswordS single, “Blameless,” which premieres today at The WILD. The electronic quartet call their sound dubwave; not one for genre assignments, I prefer the longer self-description posted to their Facebook page: “Climb onto your roof on a warm summer night. Look up. The stars are out, the moon is bright. There’s a cool breeze from the west. You hear no sirens. The city is at rest.” An apropos painting for a group of musicians who know St. Louis, Missouri as their hometown. For such a low-lit piece in the depths of winter, “Blameless” leaves us dreaming of warmer days to come.

Fans of Bat For Lashes and Beach House take note, the CaveofswordS sophomore LP, Sigils, is due March on Boxing Clever Records.
