Misfits, Musicians, Poets, and Punks at Byronesque X Hotoveli New York « The WILD Magazine

Misfits, Musicians, Poets, and Punks
at Byronesque X Hotoveli New York

Marina Abramovic, Michele Lamy, Byronesque, and Hotoveli bring out the misfits, musicians, poets, and punks as a tribute to fashion’s most iconic shapeshifters! Smack-dab in the swanky West Village, where the greatest number of NYC’s quirky and idiosyncratic streets converge, an exquisite exhibition-cum-pop-up is now live. Forged between two of fashion’s most intrepid players, Hotoveli New York (NYC’s most bleeding-edge boutique on par with Dover Street Market) and Byronesque.com (an illustrious avant-garde archivist and editorial ecstasy machine), this sartorial showcase juxtaposes high fashion with iconic outfits, underground imagery and all the starry-eyed idealism of the avant-garde (both new and old). Ambitious in both scale and subject matter, the result is a stunning sartorial and trans-media spectacle in which eye-popping examples of haute couture and ready-to-wear are presented within the context of punk rock, mod, goth, and myriad micro-cultures and meta-texts: biker, rave, seapunk, DIY, normcore, hardcore and hip hop are all represented in some circuitous way (courtesy of the amazing archives and one-offs provided by Byronesque.com).

This project isn’t some gimmicky pop-up or artsy artifice; it’s an epic explosion of art, commerce and curatorial craft, which could only have been realized at Hotoveli’s sleek fashion cathedral, highlighting rare encyclopedic, deadstock and culty collectables, and complemented by the store’s incredible interior and kickass contemporary ranges (think JULIUS, Isaac Sellam, Supreme, Yohji, Uma Wang, Vivienne Westwood, Rick Owens, Azzedine Alaïa, Jil Sander, Ilaria Nistri, Comme des Garçons, etc.). Curated by Byronesque’s bang-up editor-in-chief, Gill Linton, and Hotoveli proprietor and fashion pioneer Michael Adjiashvili, the show is an awesome, engrossing examination of the role subversive and swish fashion played in the evolution of Pop culture—and of fashion’s seemingly infinite feedback loop.

On the opening night, The WILD kicked it with tastemakers and trailblazers A$AP Rocky, Michele Lamy, Lyn Slater, Aleks Dinic, Gabriel Shuldiner, Rachel Eve Ginsberg, Gloria Yu and Kristina Dada. “It’s an all-out fashion knock-out—an incredible, wondrous pastiche of the cryptic, cult and super-cool,” said Michele Lamy, the wife, muse and creative mind behind designer Rick Owens. “We wanted to highlight the circuitous character and cross-cultural modes of avant-garde and luxury fashion,” said Hotoveli’s Michael Adjiashvili. “Together with Gill and her talented team from Byronesque.com, we are delighted to present the coolest, most conceptual, clothing, visceral vintage wear and limited edition pieces in recent fashion memory.”

The exhibit is now live at Byronesque X Hotoveli, 271 West 4th Street (and Perry Street), NYC, NY 10010. On til 5 May 2015
