Pervasive Feminisms is Bringing Artists Together in Support of Women’s History Month

On the calendars of astrologers and weathermen everywhere, the twentieth of March is circled. Now add Coco Dolle, founding director of Milk and Night, to that list. Friday, March 20th, the day of the total solar eclipse and the spring equinox will mark Milk and Night’s one-day symposium and performance event, Pervasive Feminisms.

chH43Set in The Lutheran Church of the Messiah in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Pervasive Feminisms brings together curators, artists, musicians and poets to offer a look at the feminist voices surrounding different generations and genres of art. It’s an homage to Women’s History Month but is also serves as an important gesture in building a bridge between femininity and religion. Also in support, the title ‘Pervasive Feminisms’ is a nod to the Pussy Riot song “Punk Prayer,” which pleads the Virgin Mary to become a feminist.

Coco worked with curator Jasmine Wahi and Baxton Alexander to put together a list of artists and speakers that is both smart and diverse. The evening begins with a formal discussion panel between Jaishri Abichandani, Bjork Lidin, Kristen Korvette and Viva Ruiz and continues with a visual exhibition featuring Ange (ThreeAsfour), Grace Graupe-Pillard and Leila Lal, David Ian Griess, Anya Liftig and Hilary Sand. Pastor Amy Kienzle will officially open the night with a speech by the pulpit. Concluding the night is a line-up of performances by Gabriel Don, Baxton Alexander, the No Wave Performance Task Force, FLUCT, Legacy Fatale and the musicians of The Crystal Ark. They promoted this show to a larger audience by guerrilla performance actions at The Armory Arts Week, pictured with founding director/Legacy Fatale leader Coco Dolle.

Pervasive Feminisms takes place this Friday March 20th, 4-10 PM at The Lutheran Church of the Messiah, 129 Russell Street, Brooklyn.
