tylerkandel_selfportraitWhat he is currently working on:

Other than assignments, I have been shooting a new body of in-studio portraiture work. I am also creating more fashion films that will be released in the near future.

What he thinks there is too much of, and too little of:

There is way too much negativity on the internet. Why follow someone just to harass them? I will never understand.

I believe there are too few paid creative opportunities for new photographers, filmmakers and artists of all kinds.

His earliest memory or experience of art:

My parents hung art all throughout our house, so my earliest memories were of the paintings and sculptures they owned. In particular, we use to have a large sculpture of nude woman holding a baby in our backyard. I think that sculpture is the most vivid art memory from my childhood.

What he considers a fashion “faux-pas”:

I’ve never thought about that. I just like when people have their own style and rock it. I feel it’s important to remember what works for one person does not always work for another.

Where he finds his inspiration/influences:

Although I have been influenced by the work of many photographers and have several favorites, such as Sebastiao Salgado, Daido Moriyama and Helmut Newton, I try not to use others’ images for inspiration. I feel that I am most inspired by the environments that I encounter. An idea usually comes from entering a space, either interior or exterior. That’s when I begin to notice the unique compositional and lighting qualities in that area. I see photographic inspiration all of the time, I find that I can’t turn it off.

What he is obsessed with right now:

To be honest, my main obsession is creating new work. I love to shoot all of the time. It’s difficult to get your name and photographs out there in the fashion world, so I’m working everyday to develop more powerful and dynamic imagery.

How he would describe his work in 9 words:

A monochromatic and cinematic world of composition and sensuality.

If he were another person, place or thing, what/who it would be:

I think I would like to be Bruce Wayne. It would be amazing to be Batman and a billionaire at the same time. I almost forgot about driving the Batmobile too. I think I would like that.

Tyler’s WILD Wish:

You’re not supposed to say what you wish for…
