Art Talks with Jacob Hicks

I go by Jacob Hicks, but my full name is David Jacob Lindsey-Hicks. My social security card says David Jacob Hicks, my driver’s license says Jacob Lindsey Hicks, my birth certificate says David Jacob Hicks.  I actually do not know what my real name is, but it is definitely some combination of David and Jacob and Lindsey and Hicks.

Where you are from:

I am from Midland, Texas in the Permian Basin-an ancient dried-up ocean, now a rainless desert.  In Midland, stock piles of the remains of sea creatures from millenniums ago become oil for the horrific conservative wealthy to become more wealthy off of and contribute greatly to hastening environmental devastations.  I do not blame the sea creatures, all they did was die along time ago.

Where you live now:

I live in Crown Heights in Brooklyn, New York.

What you do:

First I am a painter.  For money I am a contract worker/painter/assistant for different artists in the city.  I am a critical writer for Art-Rated, and co-founder and writer for an online science and contemporary art criticism magazine called QuantumArtReview.  Also, I regularly curate exhibitions in Manhattan and Brooklyn.  My last curation was Alchemy and Metaphysics at Trestle Project Space in Gowanus.

What was your first experience with art?

I have been engaged with art for about as long as I can remember. When I was very small I loved to draw for hours and hours on end.  My parents put me into art lessons very soon after they realized I had an aptitude for it.

What is there too much and too little of?

There is too little community, sharing, kindness, respect for life, nature, and the deep beauty of the interior self.  There is too much greed, worry for money, propaganda, anger.

What influences you?

I am influenced by biology, anthropology, philosophy and mythology.  I look to nature and multicultural forms of religion, magic, and art history for inspiration.  I am also hugely influenced by scientific extrapolations concerning the future.

If you were another person/place/ or thing what would it be?

I would be the Hindu Goddess Saraswati, or a Red Eye Tree frog, or Joseph Campbell, or Erykah Badu.

What are you obsessed with?

rare and colorful frogs, painting, the thinker/writer John Burger, retribution and the destruction of capitalism, El Greco (Spanish Mannerist), Rogier Van Der Weyden (15th century Flemish primitive painter), M.I.A., and Regina Spektor’s song, “The Prayer of Francois Villon.”

What are you currently working on?

A series of functional objects (fans, desks, shelves, rooms) made nonfunctional through an encrustation of assemblages and painting.
