Art Talks with Andoni Beristain

Andoni Beristain’s world is nothing but zany. Bursting with color, his photographs frame bizarre scenes, often captured with deadpan humor — a pineapple poses next to a stark lamp and a patterned teacup in a bemusing family portrait; neatly stacked biscuits resemble attractive gold bars, but one has suffered a bite mark.

Drawing since he was a child in the Basque region, Beristain moved to Barcelona for college, where he studied graphic design and began working with photography, urged on by a teacher. His portfolio, which contains a mixture of still life and fashion images, has since expanded into a larger project: last year, he launched the magazine La Monda, an oddball quilt of all his eyebrow-raising ideas.

“I always try to tell stories with my photography; sometimes ironic, sometimes funny and sometimes critical,” Beristain told the WILD, “but they are always thoughts I have on my mind, things I want to share.”

Who: Andoni Beristain
What he does: Photographer, graphic designer, art director, and founder & Editor-in-Chief of La Monda Magazine.
Where he was born: Zumárraga, Basque Country, Spain.
Where he lives now: Barcelona, Spain.

What he’s currently working on:
I’m working hard on La Monda Magazine, my biggest project until now. It’s going really well, and I love the world of Communication I’ve just discovered. I’m also preparing an exhibition I’m sharing with 11 other artists next September here in Barcelona, doing some editorial work and some lookbooks.

What good energy means to him:
I need humor and good feelings to continue living and enjoying my work.

What he thinks there is too much of, and too little of:
Too much prejudice and nonsense and too little normality.

With whom he would like most to go on a tête-à-tête:
Miles Aldridge or Robyn. Could it be a ménage à trois?

What he would be doing if he didn’t have his current occupation:
I’m sure I would be a huge black gospel singer.

What cracks him up:
My partner in La Monda Magazine, Ane Guerra. She’s the funniest person I’ve ever met and also the best project partner I could have ever imagined.

What he can’t live without:
>Music, creativity and humor. Bizarre shirt prints, too.

His next challenge:
I have a very important and huge personal challenge — make a living out of my creativity.

His heroes:
My parents.

Andoni’s WILD Wish:
Sing something really old-school and folk in a stadium full of people while they scream my name. Surrounded by dancers. Naked dancers. And feathers.
