Watch: alt-J Push Towards the Edge in New Video
A grim landscape slowly unfolds before us, as the sweet sound of melancholy sets the scene for alt-J’s newly released music video “Pusher.” Dressed in a drab suit, the protagonist stands on a concrete pedestal in the middle of a desolate soccer field, surrounded by bald businessmen and their vacant insouciance. The camera spins faster, round and round, encircling the protagonist as he emotionally bears his soul to the audience. As the narrative progresses, nightfall to dark, the camera closes in on the now distraught and convulsing subject. Unsuccessful in his appeals to the crowd, he fractures his neck and collapses before everyone in a harrowing last attempt. Unimpressed, the men walk off into the night.
Conceived by alt-J frontman Joe Newman and director Thomas Rhazi, “Pusher” conveys an outcry for change met with indifference, a sight too common in contemporary society. Much to the chagrin of the clip’s anti-hero, the worst reaction we could garner from society is none at all.
